Use obvious Markdown file extension for README

To allow GitHub to correctly render the `README` file, rename it to
`README.md`, which will trigger GitHub's Markdown rendering.

2264 shortcut typo fix (#2305)

* Fixes #2264

Changes some .+ typos into the correct .= characters. Removes warnings
from the backend and makes the label tags correct.
